First photo of father shot in broad daylight

The family of Rikki Berry have released a picture of the 36-year-old father-of-two who was shot dead in broad daylight. Known locally as ‘Nuggy’, Mr Berry was shot dead outside a house on Quarryside Drive in Kirkby shortly after 6.30pm on Wednesday, July 17.

Police attended the scene and he was taken to hospital by paramedics where he was sadly pronounced dead a short time later. His family is being supported by specialist family liaison officers.

Merseyside Police today confirmed that a 20-year-old man from Kirkby has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody at the time of writing. The ECHO understands the man was arrested on Mossdale Road in Kirkby, where a second cordon was erected last night.

Chief Inspector Cath Cummings, who is leading the investigation, said: “The arrest of this man is just one part of this process and the extent of his involvement will form part of our investigations. I want to stress that this investigation is in its very early stages and extensive work is underway to trace anyone who may have been involved.

“It appears that this was a targeted shooting, carried out in broad daylight, in front of witnesses, who were understandably shocked and distressed by what happened. Therefore, it is absolutely essential that we hear from anyone who saw this incident or has since heard anything about it. If you were in the area around 6.35pm and witnessed the incident, please contact us now.

“If you live in the area, please urgently check your CCTV, dash cam or doorbell footage and pass on anything that may help. Even if you think you have a small piece of information, let us assess it… Our thoughts and condolences are with Rikki’s family, who will now be supported by specialist officers as the investigation progresses.”

Chief Inspector Cummings added: “The Kirkby community will see a lot of activity in the area today and I want to encourage people to speak to our officers. We understand that people are sometimes reluctant to speak to the police, but please be assured that we will treat information sensitively and put in place the necessary measures to support those who are helping, as well as ensuring highly visible policing in the area over the coming days.

“We will have a mobile police station in the Northwood area next week so please get in touch. Gun crime is devastating, as last night’s tragic events sadly demonstrate. We will do everything in our power to bring those responsible to justice and remove guns from communities suffering the serious harm caused by organised crime.”
