Davis said there were about four minutes left in the game Friday when school officials learned of the teen’s death. The decision was made to end the game with Port St. Joe’s victory, 28-0.

Gainer’s teammates were later informed of his death.

The scene was heartbreaking. Parents came onto the field to comfort their children. “It was a feeling of helplessness,” Davis said.

Gainer was a bright student who visited Vanderbilt University to discuss the possibility of attending, Gulf County Schools Superintendent Jim Norton told WJHG-TV.
