Former Buxton firefighter was among victims in Montville explosion

One of the people killed in an explosion at a home in Montville Wednesday was a former lieutenant with the Buxton Fire Department, officials said Thursday.Buxton Fire Chief Nathan Schools said Robert Gorham, 78, was among the three people killed in the explosion, which was the result of a suspected gas leak.Gorham retired from the Buxton Fire Department in September 2021. “He was one of those men that would drop anything to help someone in need,” Schools said in a Facebook post. “Bob was involved with the fire-police unit at the end of his career and kept many of us safe on emergency scenes.” Investigators believe the explosion was caused by a leak in one of the propane-powered appliances inside the home. The explosion happened when a man inside the home lit a propane stove. Gorham and another man, Stuart Nichols, 74, were outside the home when the blast occurred. They were thrown into the trees on the property by the blast, officials said.Gorham was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died of his injuries.
