If President Biden wants to keep his vow to be a “transitional figure,” he should resign the presidency now and let Kamala Harris lead the United States until Donald Trump is sworn in. That’s the belief expressed by Harris’ former communications director, Jamal. Simmons on CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday.
The move would benefit the party in several ways, he added. “That would relieve her of having to supervise the January 6 transition, wouldn’t it, from her own defeat. And that would ensure that it would dominate the news, at a time when Democrats need to learn, drama, transparency and doing things that the public wants to see – this is the time, this is the time for us to change everything the perspective of how Democrats operate.
“Okay, it’s now gone from an internet meme to a Sunday morning show!” Dana Bash exclaimed. “Congratulations!”
Democrats have better policies, but we must realize that the old rules no longer apply. We don’t play table tennis. We’re in a mixed martial arts fight and Americans are responding to drama and excitement. We should use this to make our case for a better way forward.

Despite this skeptical reception, Simmons reiterated his position on social media. “Joe Biden has been incredible, but he should keep one last promise: to be transitional. Biden should resign and make Kamala Harris the first female president. This would turn the tables on Trump, prevent Kamala from presiding on January 6, and make it easier for the next woman to run,” he wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

Filmmaker and producer Andy Ostry agreed, although he offered a different reason. “I agree 1000% with what @JamalSimmons just said on CNN: that #Biden should immediately resign and allow #KamalaHarris to become the 47th president. Let’s at least allow America to finally have a woman in the Oval Office, if only for 2 and a half months…” he wrote on the platform.
The suggestion that Biden would resign and let Harris become president moved from social media chatter to mainstream reporting this week. On Saturday, The Guardian published a letter to readers that said: “Joe Biden should resign on his 82nd birthday, November 20, allowing Kamala Harris to become the first female president of the United States, until January 20.” It would be a decent inheritance.
On Thursday, filmmaker Darryl Wharton-Rigby made a similar request. “Dear Joe Biden,” he wrote on X. “Want to go out like a legend? Resign on December 1 and let Kamala Harris finish her term. She will officially be 47 years old and will be the first female president. Go into the dark, Brandon.
