Four killed in helicopter crash into Houston radio tower

A helicopter crashed into a radio tower in Houston late Sunday, killing four people on board, including a child, officials said.

The private R44 helicopter crashed shortly before 8 p.m. in Houston’s Second Ward, with videos showing a massive fire spreading about 600 feet to the ground.

The identities of the victims have not yet been released, but police confirmed that a child was among the four killed, without giving an age. All four were on board the helicopter and no injuries were reported on the ground.

The helicopter “was a private sightseeing helicopter,” Houston City Council member Mario Castillo told X.

Houston Mayor John Whitmire said firefighters arrived on the scene within minutes of the crash.

“It’s a tragic event tonight, it’s a tragic loss of life,” Whitmire said Sunday evening.

Authorities said the helicopter took off from Ellington Field, about 15 minutes from where it crashed. The plane’s destination is currently unclear.

The accident remains under investigation by local authorities, the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.
