Guns, steroids and million discovered in police officer’s home

A search of the home of a New York state trooper under investigation uncovered guns, steroids and cash, according to a report.

PIX11 News reported the findings Thursday evening following a 19-hour search by authorities at the home that Thomas Mascia, 27, shares in West Hempstead with his parents.

According to the station, approximately $1 million in cash and steroids were discovered. Several weapons were also seized from the house.

The search is part of an investigation into an Oct. 30 shooting of Mascia on Long Island’s Southern State Parkway. He said he was shot in the right leg near Exit 17 after stopping to help a stranded motorist. He claimed the driver shot him and drove off.

After initially being hailed as a hero, the search for the driver was halted as questions were raised about Mascia’s story.

State police said this week that they had “reason to believe that the incident did not occur in the manner in which it was reported.” He was suspended without pay on Monday and his service weapon and badge were confiscated.

The investigation is trying to determine whether Mascia’s gunshot wound was self-inflicted. Weapons confiscated from the home will be tested to determine if they were used in Mascia’s shooting.

Mascia’s father – also named Thomas – was fired by the New York Police Department in 1993 after pleading guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute cocaine. He was one of five officers on the force living on Long Island charged, the report said.
