Harvey Weinstein has tested positive for COVID-19 and contracted double pneumonia, an authorized representative confirmed Thursday.
Weinstein, who is awaiting a new trial in his criminal case in New York and has appealed his conviction in California, also suffers from diabetes, high blood pressure, spinal stenosis and fluid in his heart and lungs, the representative said. He is currently being held in the Bellevue Hospital Correctional Facility, according to New York City Department of Corrections records.
The former Hollywood mogul has been hospitalized several times in recent years. He was brought to Bellevue Hospital with chest pain in 2020, shortly after being sentenced at 23 years old behind bars charges of rape and criminal sexual act.
Weinstein also suffered a cardiac procedure in Bellevue to open a blocked artery after his conviction, CBS New York reported.
He was too hospitalized in April Shortly after a decision by the Court of Appeal overturned his 2020 rape conviction. At the time, his attorney, Arthur L. Aidala, told CBS News in a statement that the New York City Department of Corrections had “determined that Mr. Weinstein requires immediate medical attention. A myriad of tests are being performed on Harvey and he is being held for observation.”
“Harvey Weinstein used to drink champagne and eat caviar and now he’s in the cafeteria buying chips and M&Ms,” Aidala said in May“Mentally, he’s fine. He’s sharp as a nail. But physically, he’s been in decline for years.”
Weinstein remained behind bars after his New York conviction was overturned because he was convicted in a separate case in California.
New York prosecutors are pursuing a New trial for Weinstein. It is expected to begin shortly after Labor Day. Last month, Weinstein’s lawyers appealed his conviction in Los Angeles. He was convicted in that case and sentenced to 16 years in prison in 2023.
Weinstein has denied all allegations of sexual misconduct. He has appeared in court in recent years using a walker and a wheelchair.
