Simone Biles has the chance to make history at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris — but the “GOAT gymnastics” has already had an indelible impact on the sport.
The seven-time Olympic medalist has had five gymnastics moves named in her honor. The moves are named after the first gymnast to perform them at an international competition, in accordance with the International Gymnastics Federation’s code of points. The move must also exceed a certain level of difficulty.
Here’s what you need to know about gymnastics moves named after Simone Biles.
The Biles (Floor)
The floor move is the first skill to bear the 27-year-old Olympian’s name. It’s a double layout with a half-twist into the second flip.
Biles first performed this move at the 2013 World Championships. She was just 16 at the time.
The Biles (Vault)
This vault move, which Biles performed at the 2018 World Championships, consists of a half-twist on the vault table and a full double front somersault.
The Biles II (floor)
The second-stage move named after Biles is a triple-double she landed at the 2019 World Championships. The move includes two somersaults and three twists.
The Biles (Beam)
Biles I also had a beam movement named after her at the 2019 World Championship. This move, also called “The Biles,” is a beam dismount that involves two twists and two somersaults.
The Biles II (Vault)
This jumping move was named after Biles at the World Championships in 2023This is a Yurchenko style jump with two somersaults in a pike position.
Biles was seen practice movement before the Paris Olympics.
A sixth skill?
Friday, Biles submitted a new element for the uneven bars — and if she performs it at the Games, it will be named after her. The move consists of a forward hip circle followed by a turn and a half to a handstand position, and is a variation of a move she already performs at the beginning of her uneven bars routine.
And if she succeeds, she would become the only active gymnast to possess an eponymous skill in all four events.
