Shocking footage has been released by police showing a police officer being stabbed in the neck. Jacob Brown launched a violent and unprovoked attack on two police officers as they responded to a car crash on Wednesday, July 26 last year.
The 27-year-old man, dressed entirely in black clothing with his hood tied tightly around his face, approached the responding officers, PS Ansell and PS Foster, from behind and immediately attacked PS Foster, punching him in the head and neck.
Officer Ansell began struggling with Brown as he attempted to stop the attacks on his colleague, but he too was shot multiple times in the neck and upper body. A third officer, Officer Wolstencroft, then fired his taser at the attacker before arresting him. After the arrest, Officer Ansell noticed blood coming from his neck where he had suffered a serious stab wound, and his colleague, Officer Foster, was helping him treat the wound.
In shocking footage shared by Greater Manchester Police this week, Brown, of Wood Road, Whalley Range, can be seen walking past the scene of the collision before rushing towards PS Ansell. Despite being remanded in custody, Brown continued his reign of terror while in Liverpool Prison.
On Thursday 10 August last year, Brown stabbed a prison staff member during an induction session. The attacker armed himself with a sharp object before attacking the staff member, a man in his 50s, cutting off his ear and head. Less than a month later, on Friday 1 September 2023, Brown attacked a prison officer and stabbed him in the neck with a sharp object.
As a result, Brown was re-charged and was sentenced on Friday, April 19, 2024, to indefinite hospitalization until he is deemed safe and stable for release after pleading guilty to one count of attempted murder and three counts of intentional wounding.
All three officers were honoured with the Bravery Award at the annual Chief Constable Awards in October 2023. Detective Inspector Kelly, of South Manchester CID, led the GMP investigation and said at the time: “Jacob Brown is regarded as a dangerous and violent man, as the judge also highlighted. There did not appear to be any clear motive for these attacks – the officers were taken completely by surprise and only their quick reactions prevented the fatal outcome.
“The prospect of violence against police officers is a daily threat and will not be tolerated. I am pleased that our swift and thorough investigation has ensured that Brown is held accountable for his actions and he is now safely away from the communities of Greater Manchester.”
Detective Inspector Neil Dillon of Merseyside Police added: “Brown is clearly an extremely dangerous individual and thankfully he has been convicted and sentenced for these serious offences. Officers and staff who work for the police and prison service understand the risks of their work but they should never have to tolerate such violence against them when they are simply trying to carry out their duties.
“The impact of these attacks cannot be underestimated. They can have a significant impact on their physical and mental wellbeing and on their families. My message to those who commit violence against the police is clear: remember that whatever you think of us, one day you or your family may need our help too.”
