Las Vegas — For almost a year now, 32-year-old renter Mason Cunha and his real estate agent have struggled to find the right house in Las Vegas at the right price.
What is stopping Cunha from buy a house?
“It just doesn’t make sense right now to buy a home with interest rates where they are and with inventory the way it is,” Cunha said.
Vice President Kamala Harris said that if she wins the November general election, she projects working with the private sector to build three million new homes and rental properties.
Cunha, a Harris supporter, favors the proposal.
“I think it would definitely help if you were to double, triple or quadruple the inventory,” Cunha said.
Harris also proposes banning price-fixing by business owners and giving first-time homebuyers who have paid their rent on time for two years up to $25,000 in price-fixing assistance. of funds.
“I would like to review what the qualifications are for this,” said Andrew Lum, 32, of Las Vegas, a wedding DJ and married father. “Where did this $25,000 come from?”
Lum sold her house when her family grew. He now rents a bigger house but cannot afford to buy it. Lum says his life was better when former President Donald Trump was in office.
“In 2020, we were able to buy a house,” Lum said. “We were able to purchase it at a possible interest rate. We were able to purchase it with, you know, low down payments.”
Trump’s plan is to reduce mortgage rates by reducing inflation. Trump also said he would open limited portions federal lands to allow new homes to be built, a plan the Biden administration is already adopting. As an example, one such 20-acre plot of land in Las Vegas was recently transferred from the federal government to Clark County, and it has now been designated for affordable housing.
According to the Congressional Research Service, 80.1 percent of Nevada’s land is owned by the federal government.
Trump also said his promise mass deportations will make more housing available. It’s an argument that Lum and Cunha don’t seem to agree with.
“It seems a little far-fetched to me that all the houses are being bought by immigrants,” Lum said.
“I think everything Trump says should be taken with a very aggressive grain of salt because he is known for inflating the truth,” Cunha said.
