A whale breached within yards of a fisherman in a motorized kayak off the coast of Swampscott Monday morning, in a moment captured by a local television photographer.
Clark Scott told NBC10 Boston he “could almost touch” the whale, which was about 20 feet away from him.
“I was fishing, minding my own business, and I heard him exhale right behind me,” he told the station.
NBC10 Boston photographer Mark Garfinkel captured the moment.
Clark told NBC10 Boston he followed the whale into Nahant Bay.
“He was fast,” he said. “I have an electric motor on my kayak, which allows me to pass him at full speed, and he passed me at full speed. I eventually lost sight of him, but it was an incredible experience.”
According to NBC10 Boston, scientists at the New England Aquarium confirmed the whale was a humpback.
