Iron Man’s bizarre new enemy is taking on Tony Stark in a single panel that has huge potential as the next big Marvel Comics meme.
Warning: spoilers ahead for Iron Man #20!
A new preview of Iron Man‘s latest outing offers up a genius single-panel situation destined to be Marvel’s next epic meme, following in the footsteps of greats including Spider-Man and Sauron’s “I want to turn people into dinosaurs” exchange.
Christopher Cantwell and CAFU’s Iron Man series has put Tony Stark through the wringer. The recent Korvac saga has seen the Golden Avenger achieve his most powerful form and simultaneously be rocked by addiction and lapses in judgement that verge on villainy. With this context in mind, it feels good to see Iron Man being placed in a more humorous and meme-able situation.
Recently, Cantwell tweeted out some sneak peak images of the upcoming Iron Man #20. Written by Chris Cantwell and featuring art from Ángel Unzueta, the previews tee up romantic development and some gorilla warfare. The gift to all meme makers comes from the gorilla panel. Hurling Tony from a rooftop in New York City, a “hyper-intelligent gorilla” screams at Iron Man, “I refuse to be a pawn in a rich man’s game!” It’s the perfect image to take out of context, and is even framed for fans to paste different faces over the characters depending on the situation.
Okay, well, speaking of Iron Man…

But he also fights a hyper-intelligent gorilla in New York City.

The preview follows another of Cantwell’s widely shared recent posts on Twitter, jokingly threatening to kill off Iron Man in order to spite a child who had been mean to his son. Fans can be assured that when Iron Man #20 arrives, it’s likely to continue the current run’s acclaimed mix of humor and pathos.
With a mix of character-focused stories and outlandish sci-fi and fantasy concepts, superhero comics offer many opportunities for amazing nuggets of comedy, with public figures often falling afoul of comparisons to comic-book supervillains. In this case, Tony himself is the butt of the joke, and it will be fascinating to see how he actually finds himself in this situation when the comic releases, as well as how the issue also fits in Tony’s intent to propose to Avengers ally Patsy Walker, aka Hellcat.
Sometimes fans have to take matters into their own hands to turn a comic panel into meme gold, like the fan edited panel of Moon Knight calling Dracula a “big f***ing nerd.” But other times comics creators drop bits of manna from the heavens. The billionaire-hating gorilla set to appear in Chris Cantwell and CAFU’s Iron Man #20 is blessedly the latter.
