Jamie Foxx finally shares details about his near-death experience in 2023 in his new comedy special “Jamie Foxx: What Had Happened Was.”
Foxx was hospitalized in April 2023 while filming a movie in Atlanta. At the time, his daughter Corinne said on social media that the actor had “experienced a medical complication”. Fox said later that his daughter, his sister Diedra Dixon and medical staff saved his life. He said he didn’t remember nearly three weeks of his life after the unspecified scare.
In his latest special, which was just released on Netflix, Foxx said he suffered a brain hemorrhage that led to a stroke. He said he was in a coma for 20 days and his condition was so serious that his family went to his bedside, although they tried to keep the details of his condition secret.
“I’ve been to hell and back,” Foxx said.
Foxx said that when he woke up from the coma, he found himself in a wheelchair and unable to walk. The Oscar winner said he had to relearn basic functions and rely on nurses for daily needs like taking a shower. Doctors told him that a cure was possible, but that it would be a difficult process.
During the stage, Foxx showed how effective his recovery was. He sang, danced and played the piano, and said his family and his faith helped him heal.
“CBS Mornings” co-host Gayle King attended one of three tapings of Foxx’s special. King said he was “in great shape” during the recordings and said she was happy he was able to tell his story.
“He did three nights in Atlanta with packed audiences,” King recalled. “No one ever revealed what happened, because everyone wanted Jamie to tell it on his own terms.”
