In the middle of a rescue operation last week, someone stole the Oakland Fire Department’s jaws of life, authorities said.
Firefighters had the tool out during the response. After using it, firefighters discovered the equipment had been stolen, according to an Oakland Police Department spokesperson.
Used by emergency personnel after serious car accidents, the hydraulic tool opens or cuts through debris to save a person inside. Jaws of Life tools can be operated by a single person and typically weigh about 50 pounds.
An Oakland police spokesperson said their tool was stolen around 7:15 p.m. Friday in the 1600 block of West Street.
Police have not released any information about the suspects.
An Oakland Fire Department spokesperson said the agency is working with police to recover the tool.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Oakland Police Department Criminal Investigation Division at (510) 238-3728.
