Human remains have been found during the search for Jay Slater, almost a month after the 19-year-old Briton went missing in Tenerife.
A body was found in the area where he disappeared, the Civil Guard said, while a charity supporting the family confirmed it was discovered near the last location of his mobile phone.
DNA tests will be carried out to establish the identity of the person, as well as a post-mortem examination. The body was found with Mr Slater’s belongings and clothes, the charity LBT Global said, with initial police investigations suggesting he “may have been the victim of an accidental fall”.
The apprentice bricklayer from Lancashire had attended the NRG music festival on June 16 before checking into an Airbnb in the village of Masca with two men. He left the following morning and appeared to be undertaking an 11-hour walk back to his flat.
The owner of a cafe last saw him. She said the teenager asked her for bus times before deciding not to wait two hours for a service. She then saw him leaving the village on foot, and his phone was last detected in the Teno Rural National Park.

Where was Jay Slater last seen?
Jay Slater had travelled to the island to attend a music festival with his friends, on his first holiday without his family.
On Sunday, June 16, he had spent the day at the NRG music festival where his friends had left him to return early to their accommodation after a tiring weekend.
He then went to a nightclub on Veronicas Street in Playa de Las Americas, close to his holiday home, until the early hours of the morning. At around 5am, Mr Slater went to an AirBnb where two men he had met were staying about 27 miles (43 kilometres) further north in the remote village of Masca.
One of the men has been identified as Ayub Qassim, who told the MailOnline he let Mr Slater stay at his accommodation because he “had nowhere else to go” and insisted he was safe when he left the property at 7.30am.
Mr Slater was last seen by a cafe owner, who said the teenager had asked him for bus times before deciding not to wait two hours for a service.
The cafe owner said she saw Mr Slater “rapidly walking away” from the village, and his phone was last detected nearby in Teno Rural National Park.
On Monday, around 8:15 a.m., he called his friend Lucy Law to tell her he was lost, needed a drink of water and had 1% battery left on his phone.

Donations continue to flow for Jay Slater
Donations continue to pour in to the GoFundMe campaign to help find Jay Slater, after Tenerife’s Civil Guard said they found a body during their search for the teenager.
More than 4,000 people donated a total of more than £55,000 to the GoFundMe set up by Jay’s friend Lucy Law on behalf of his mother Debbie Duncan when the search began last month.
Ms Duncan said the money was being used to support mountain rescue teams and to cover her own accommodation and food costs during her extended stay on the island.

Body found ‘in very inaccessible area’, report says
Jay Slater’s phone was last located near a stretch of road near Mirador La Cruz de Hilda, a cafe near the village of Masca with dense cacti and shrubs on either side, making it slow for helicopters, drones and sniffer dogs scouring the area.
The body discovered on Monday morning was found by mountain rescuers from the Civil Guard in a very “inaccessible” area.

The 19-year-old, from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, went missing almost a month ago while on holiday with friends.
Lancashire Police had previously offered to help the Spanish Civil Guard in their search for the apprentice bricklayer.
A police spokesman said on Monday: “We were informed today (Monday 15 July) by the Guardia Civil that they have found the body of a man and all indications are that it is Jay Slater. Although at this stage no formal identification has been made, our thoughts are with Jay’s family at this time and we continue to offer them our support.”

The Civil Guard continues its search discreetly
Tenerife’s Civil Guard has announced that it has found a body during a search for Jay Slater, despite publicly calling off the search more than two weeks ago.
After 13 days of searching, Spanish authorities called off the search on June 30, but said they were continuing their investigation.
However, after recovering a body on Monday, they revealed that they had indeed continued a “relentless and discreet” search in which “the natural space was preserved so that it would not be filled with curious onlookers.”
