Jay Slater Latest: Mother Posts Personal Message After Teenage Boy’s Body Found in Tenerife

Footage shows search team that found Jay Slater’s body in action

Jay Slater’s mother has posted a personal message after receiving support from “thousands of people” following the discovery of her son’s body in Tenerife.

Debbie Duncan remains on the Spanish island after the 19-year-old’s body was found on Monday.

Spanish authorities believe the teenager’s death was caused by trauma from a fall in the rocky area near the village of Masca in the north of the country.

The apprentice mason was spotted leaving the village on the morning of June 16 as he set out on an 11-hour walk back to his holiday accommodation.

Since Jay’s body was identified, Charity LBT Global has been helping the family complete paperwork as part of the repatriation process, which could take at least a week, chief executive Matthew Searle said.

Floral tributes were also left by family near where Jay’s body was found.

Speaking on Wednesday, Mr Searle said: The Independent:”There is a personal message from Debbie saying ‘thank you so much’ for the thousands of messages of love and support she has received. She is upset at the moment but will try to respond in due course.”

The Civil Guard insists that it is continuing the search discreetly

The Tenerife Civil Guard assures that it has continued its searches discreetly, even though it publicly interrupted them more than two weeks ago.

After 13 days of searching, Spanish authorities called off the search on June 30, but said they were continuing their investigation.

However, after recovering Jay Slater’s body on Monday, they revealed that they had indeed continued a “relentless and discreet” search in which “the natural space was preserved so that it would not be filled with curious onlookers.”

Where was Jay Slater last seen and where was his body found?

When British teenager Jay Slater disappeared in northern Tenerife just under a month ago, the case captured the nation’s attention.

Helicopters, sniffer dogs and, in the final days of the search, private experts were called in, in the hope of finding the Lancashire teenager.

The search followed Mr Slater’s last known steps through dangerous valleys and treacherous ravines until a body, believed to be that of the 19-year-old, was found after four gruelling weeks.

‘So much to do’

Work is underway to repatriate Jay Slater’s body, with the family working on the documents with the help of the charity LBT Global.

The teenager’s body was discovered on Monday, and it is now hoped the family will be able to take him home to Lancashire for a funeral.

Speaking to the BBC, Matthew Searle, managing director of LBT Global, said: “There’s so much to do, and obviously when you’re in a foreign country, you don’t speak the language, you don’t have anyone around you to really help you, and you’re in the situation that Jay’s parents are in… it’s just not the sort of thing you can cope with, it’s just overwhelming.”

The process is not expected to be completed for at least another week.

Three unanswered questions

Despite the discovery of Jay Slater’s body, questions remain.

Why was he in the national park?

Why did he choose to walk rather than wait for a bus?

Who were the men he was with?

Here we examine three questions:

GoFundMe proceeds could be used for repatriation costs

Nearly £60,000 has been raised on the GoFundMe page for the search for Jay Slater.

Now that his body has been found, the BBC says it understands that part of it could be used to cover repatriation costs.

The family are now working on the necessary paperwork to repatriate the teenager’s body home with the help of the charity LBT Global.

It is hoped that insurance money will cover the cost of returning Jay’s body home – but the proceeds from the fundraiser offer another option.

“It’s time to grieve”

Questions remain over Jay’s death

Matthew Searle, chief executive of the charity LBT Global, which supports the family, said that although the family now had confirmation of Jay’s death and the circumstances of his death, some questions remained unanswered.

He said The Independent that they will still “wonder” why the 19-year-old was in the ravine, off the main road, when he died, and where exactly he was heading.

These are questions the family may never find out, but they will soon be able to take his body home for a funeral.
