Following the decision not to have Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum play in Team USA’s Olympic opener, Tatum has responded. Many thought he might be sick, but the The star shot down this story.
“No, it’s fine.”
With Team USA outscoring Serbia 100-84, many wondered why the star player was benched for the entire game. At halftime, it looked like head coach Steve Kerr had saved Tatum for the remainder of the game, but he never saw any action.

Kerr spoke after the game and was asked about the decision not to start the five-time All-Star in the opener. The veteran head coach didn’t mince words and fully owned his decision.
“I went with the combinations that seemed right to me. It was for tonight. He handled the situation well. He’s going to leave his mark.”
Team USA didn’t need Tatum in this game as they were led by Kevin Durant and LeBron James. Durant scored 23 points in his first Olympic appearance after suffering a calf injury in the pregame games. He came on as a substitute and provided a huge spark for the Americans.
James was in his usual form, recording 21 points, eight rebounds and nine assists. He continued to play brilliantly at the Olympics, which is likely his last chance to represent the United States. James is set to retire in the next two seasons, so he took full advantage of his time with Team USA.
With Durant back in the mix, Tatum may have been pushed out of the rotation, at least for this game. As Kerr said, his time will come and the Americans will need the star forward to help them win the gold medal.
Indiana Pacers point guard Tyrese Haliburton also didn’t get any playing time in this game. Kerr may be looking to see what works with his rotations, but the decision to keep Tatum out is questionable. He helped Team USA win the gold medal in 2020, so he’s no stranger to the Olympics.
Tatum will likely get some playing time in the upcoming game against South Sudan. In the exhibition game against South Sudan, Tatum had nine points, one rebound, one steal and one block. Tatum’s scoring ability could be needed if Team USA looks to be cautious with Durant as he gradually returns to normal from his injury.
