Joe Lycett steps up David Beckham ultimatum as deadline gets closer
Birmingham comedian Joe Lycett is threatening to shred £10,000 tomorrow (Sunday, November 20) if David Beckham doesn’t leave his Qatar World Cup deal
The Birmingham comedian is urging England football hero Beckham to give up his ambassador role due to Qatar’s stance on LGBTQ+ issues.
Lycett released a video last week on social media directly addressing Beckham, saying he would give £10,000 of his own cash to charities that support gay people in football if Beckham pulls out.
And if he declines, Lycett says he will shred his money – posting a picture of the shredder he plans to use yesterday (Friday, November 18).
So far Beckham has declined to respond directly to Lycett. Earlier on Friday he defended his role at the Qatar World Cup saying the tournament will be a platform for ‘progress, inclusivity and tolerance’.
He said: “Qatar dreamed of bringing the World Cup to a place that it had never been before, but that it wouldn’t be enough just to achieve things on the pitch. The pitch would be a platform for progress.”
Earlier today, Lycett issued a new post – showing the cash he could shred and saying 24 hours to go….
The post has prompted many people to respond urging Lycett to donate the cash to a raft of good causes, including Birmingham charity LoveBrum.
Another twitter user said: “Just a thought @joelycett but shredding it does nobody any good. Maybe giving it to a queer charity or a food bank would be more useful. Especially as Beckham won’t give a toss.”
