Kamala Harris to speak with CNN

Vice President Kamala Harris sits down with CNN this week for her first interview since President Joe Biden dropped his re-election bid.

The Democratic presidential candidate will be joined by her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, in an interview with CNN anchor Dana Bash in Savannah, Georgia. The interview will air Thursday at 8 p.m. Central Time.

Harris’ lack of access has become a key Republican argument against her as she emerged as the top contender on the Democratic ticket after Biden’s July 21 announcement. The CNN interview could be an opportunity for Harris to calm criticism that she is unprepared for uncontrolled environments, but it could also carry risks as her team tries to build on momentum from the ticket shakeup and the Democratic National Convention.

During her three-plus years as vice president, she gave on-camera and in-person interviews to The Associated Press and numerous other outlets, often at a more frequent pace than Biden.

Trump’s campaign has been counting the number of days she hasn’t given an interview. On Tuesday, she responded to the news by clarifying that the interview was joint, saying she was “not competent enough to do it alone.”

Earlier this month, Harris told reporters she wanted to do her first official interview before the end of August.

Harris travels with members of the media aboard Air Force Two on every trip and almost always comes to the back of the plane to speak with them a few minutes before takeoff. Her office insists, however, that those conversations are confidential, so what she says cannot be used publicly.

She will rally Savannah voters on Thursday as part of a bus tour that begins Wednesday.
