LIVE: Manchester Airport passengers face delays with HUGE queues stretching into car park

Footage from Manchester Airport shows passengers in long queues as the impact of the global IT outage continues to be felt.

One traveler said it took about an hour and 45 minutes to reach the terminal. The airport said check-in and boarding were “taking longer than usual” due to the IT outage affecting airlines. It said the majority of flights operating were “unaffected.”

In a new statement released at 4pm, they said: “Global IT issues continue to affect some of our airlines. Check-in and boarding on affected airlines are being handled manually and are taking longer than usual, resulting in queues at check-in. Our resilience team and customer service colleagues are on hand to assist passengers. However, if passengers are travelling with hand luggage only, they are encouraged to proceed directly to security.

“Flight schedules have been affected by the effects of the global IT outage at airports around the world. This means that some flights may be delayed or cancelled by airlines at short notice.

“Passengers should continue to check the status of their flight with their airline before travelling to the airport and should follow their airline’s advice on the best time to arrive. We also advise checking the latest travel advice, as some rail services have also been affected by these issues.

“We thank all our passengers for their patience and understanding.”

The outage comes as a faulty Crowdstrike update caused major infrastructure to shut down, with IT systems going offline on Friday. The outage “caused disruption to the majority of GP practices” in England, but had no known impact on 999 or emergency services, NHS England said.

At airports, flights have been cancelled and staff have been forced to manually check passengers on some flights to reduce long queues. And one of the affected airlines, Ryanair, has urged passengers whose flights have been cancelled to leave the airport.

We’ll bring you the latest news in the live blog below…

Every delayed and cancelled flight

We have compiled a list of flights delayed and cancelled at Manchester Airport following the outage, which is available here.

The airlines concerned

Several airlines, including Ryanair and KLM, have reported disruptions.

Here’s what the airlines said.

What is the cause of the failure?

It has been described as the “largest computer outage in history”, causing chaos around the world, blocking flights and train services and affecting health systems.

And it all seems to have been caused by a problem in a single software.

More information about the cause of the problem is available here.
