A major motorway leading into London has been closed southbound following a crash this afternoon, Sunday 21 July. The M1 was closed at four junctions – between junction 4 near Elstree and junction 1 near Wembley.
A vehicle that was driving dangerously did not stop to let the police pass and had an accident. The driver fled on foot and a search was carried out using the police helicopter. He was later found and arrested.
The accident itself happened between junction 2 A1 Watford Way (Barnet By-Pass) Fiveways Corner and junction 1 A406 North Circular (Staples Corner).

M1 reopens
The M1 has reopened following the previous crash and police pursuit near Brent Cross.
The road was closed for several hours while police searched for the driver of a car that failed to stop for police and then crashed.
He was arrested and taken to hospital before being taken into police custody.

Diversion in place
A diversion has been put in place on the M1 as the motorway remains closed.
The diversion is suitable for cars, but cannot be used by heavy goods vehicles.

National road authorities warn of accident
National Roads Authority has warned drivers of a major closure of the M1 this afternoon.
On X, they posted: “The #M1 in #GreaterLondon is closed southbound between J4 #Elstree and J1 #Wembley due to a collision.
