Man charged in series of shootings near UC Berkeley

Berkeley police arrested a 45-year-old San Francisco man in connection with a recent string of shootings near the UC Berkeley campus, officials said.

Jeffrey Darren Hue was arrested Thursday at a private residence in San Francisco on suspicion of more than a dozen charges, including assault on a person with a firearm and negligent discharge of a firearm.

He was found with an arsenal of weapons, including assault rifles, handguns and ammunition, according to a press release from the Berkeley Police Department. As of Saturday afternoon, according to Alameda County records, Hue was being held at the Berkeley City Jail with bail set at $80,000.

Shortly after midnight on Oct. 26, officers “responded to a series of shots fired incidents in the south campus area,” according to the Berkeley police statement.

In an email, Berkeley Police Officer Byron White identified six “shooting locations” in the UC Berkeley campus area, including the 2,400 blocks of Telegraph and Durant avenues; the 2,200 blocks of Bancroft Way and University Avenue; the 2400 block of Durant Avenue; the 2300 block of Fulton Street and the 1100 block of Sutter Street.

“No one reported being injured by the shooting,” White said. “We don’t know exactly what the suspect was aiming for,” he added.

Berkeley police said they identified Hue through interviews with witnesses and a review of surveillance video, as well as Shot Spotter and automated license plate recognition technology.

Hue’s arraignment is scheduled for 9 a.m. Tuesday at the Wiley W. Manuel Courthouse.

The UC Berkeley, San Francisco and East Bay Regional Parks police departments, as well as the Berkeley and San Francisco fire departments, provided assistance, according to the Berkeley police statement.

The case remained under investigation as of Saturday morning.
