Man exiting subway stabbed in back by stranger at Manhattan station

A subway passenger was stabbed in the back by an unknown person Friday night as he got off a train at a Manhattan station.

The 29-year-old victim had just gotten off a Brooklyn-bound L train at the First Ave. subway station near 14th Street in the East Village around 8:45 p.m. when another passenger suddenly plunged a knife into his back, police and witnesses told the Daily News.

A security guard monitoring the platform saw the victim confused and in pain, and someone running away down the stairs toward the street. Police later described the potential attacker as “an Asian male with a bag.”

“Someone came from behind and stabbed him in the back,” said the security guard, who gave his name as Samba. “He didn’t see it coming.”

“He screamed, ‘Someone hit me.’ But then we looked and saw all this blood.”

Medics transported the victim to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition.

Police hoped that a review of surveillance cameras at the station would help identify the attacker.
