Man killed in crash on Stevenson near Lyon

A Romeoville man was killed early Saturday morning in a two-vehicle crash on Stevenson Highway near west suburban Lyons, according to Illinois State Police.

Amarildo Ponce, 53, was killed, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

The collision happened shortly before 1:30 a.m. on southbound Interstate 55 near First Avenue, authorities said.

Ponce was behind the wheel of a Honda Civic traveling south on the highway in the center lane when she struck a Subaru SUV traveling alongside, state police said in a news release.

Ponce was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead about 50 minutes later, according to the medical examiner’s office. No conditions were given for the second driver.

An autopsy performed Sunday determined Ponce died from multiple blunt force injuries caused by the collision, and the death was ruled an accident.

All southbound lanes of Stevenson were closed for several hours while authorities investigated the crash, with traffic diverted onto First Avenue, authorities said.

No possible cause of the accident was given.
