A man was shot dead Sunday next to his Lamborghini during an attempted armed robbery outside the Bloomingdale’s store in South Coast Plaza, Costa Mesa police said. The shooter remains at large.
Around 8:40 p.m., a man attempted to rob the victim in a parking lot at the upscale mall. The shooter shot the victim in the leg and fled before officers arrived, according to a police department social media post.
No arrests had been made as of Monday afternoon, a police spokesperson confirmed. The victim was taken to hospital and treated for a non-life-threatening injury, according to the Facebook post.
Video of the incident broadcast on ABC7 showed a group of people surrounding the victim, who was lying on the ground next to a Lamborghini SUV.
“You hear a gunshot and you see all these people,” one witness told local independent news outlet OCHawk. “I guess they looked like they were arguing, but they started fighting and then we just — the guy fell to the ground.”
A videographer at the scene said the gunman tried to take the victim’s Rolex watch and car, the Daily Pilot reported.
“South Coast Plaza Mall is extremely grateful for the Costa Mesa Police Department’s quick response to this unfortunate event,” a statement read. “We wish the victim a full and speedy recovery.”
Police said the incident was isolated and there were no active threats in the immediate area. Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Detective J. Lopez at (714) 754-4873.
