The incident canceled trains on the Newburyport and Rockport lines during rush hour Tuesday evening.
A man was struck and killed by a train in Everett Tuesday evening. The incident caused the MBTA to cancel commuter rail service on the Newburyport and Rockport lines during peak hours.
According to MBTA Transit Police, the adult male intentionally stepped into the right-of-way near the Costco in Everett and was struck by a commuter train. The man was pronounced dead from his injuries.
“On behalf of the (Transit Police Department) and the entire MBTA organization, we extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased,” police said in a statement.
According to the MBTA Commuter Rail’s X-count, the disruptions began with the 5:05 p.m. Rockport Line train leaving North Station, which terminated in Chelsea. The 5:35 p.m. Newburyport Line train was canceled shortly afterward.
Train service continued to be disrupted on both lines until around 9 p.m., but delays may have persisted.
According to Keolis, service on the two lines had returned to normal as of Wednesday morning.
