Manchester United still pushing to sign Liverpool target Antony

Manchester United still want to sign Liverpool target Antony, according to reports. Ajax aren’t making it easy, however.

This comes from Goal Brasil. They claim that Manchester United are not giving up on signing Antony and will try to get him this summer.

But they have a problem. United’s offer falls £16m short of Ajax’s £67m asking price – and these numbers are getting out of control. £67m for the Brazilian is an awful lot of money but the, the Dutchmen don’t want to sell.

“It is obvious, we have capital on the pitch but we are keeping the squad we have left,” was the line from Ajax director, Gerry Hamstra last week. “Nobody is going anywhere now.”

But United won’t give up. Whether that means they’ll actually offer £67m for Antony is anyone’s guess.

In the background here are Liverpool, who supposedly like the player, too. Yahoo Sports recently made that claim, as did Fabrizio Romano. There’s no suggestion that a deal could happen this summer, however.

Thus Liverpool are really playing the waiting game here. Antony is a fantastic player but one they don’t quite have room for – but maybe they do in 2023.

The hope will be that Ajax stand strong and stick to their asking price, then, as it really seems that United won’t pay it. Antony is obviously a brilliant talent but still relatively unproven at the absolute highest level – that will give any team pause over a £67m fee.

In a year’s time, though, Antony could easily be worth that to most clubs and Liverpool would be one of those. At the same time, he’d almost certainly accept any offer from United if they can get an agreement with Ajax.

It’s not nice but Liverpool just need to cross their fingers if they truly want Antony at Anfield. There’s not really another option.
