Many injured after car ‘ploughs through’ popular family park in Northern Ireland

A car reportedly drove through a park frequented by families and walkers, injuring several people.

The incident took place in Hazelbank Park, off Shore Road, Newtownabbey, Co Antrim, when a red car reportedly drove up the grass verge and into the park through an area where a number of families were picnicking.

A family member of a person who was at the park at the time of the incident said: “My son-in-law was on the beach when he heard screams and saw the car going down the bank. Shortly afterwards the police and ambulance arrived.”

The witness continued: “The vehicle was parked in the car park and appeared to roll over the edge of the grass and then onto the bank. There were so many families out today, with the nice weather, it could have been terrible. I think there were a few people with minor injuries.”

Police, firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene and it is still unclear how many people were injured as a result of the incident.
