The shark is back in the water, trying to repeat its 1998 feat of swimming across Lake Michigan.

Jim Dreyer entered the lake in Grand Haven, Michigan, on Tuesday and began swimming to Wisconsin. The distance to Milwaukee is expected to be about 83 miles, but it could be more, depending on lake conditions.

“Even with all the intensive training and planning, I understand the dangers inherent in this independent swim,” said Dreyer, who dubbed himself the Shark before his historic first swim last month.

Dreyer, 60, tows supplies in a rubber dinghy attached to him. Satellite communications will allow him to contact a crew for help if needed.

“I hope this calculated risk captures the imagination of adventurous souls around the world as I navigate the seemingly endless expanse of Lake Michigan,” said Dreyer, who is also trying to raise money for the nonprofit U.S. Coast Guard Chiefs Association.

In 1998, Dreyer swam across Lake Michigan from Two Rivers, Wisconsin, to Ludington State Park, Michigan, a grueling feat that took nearly 41 hours.

Last year he tried to cross the lake but gave up after 10 hours due to bad weather.
