During the final laps of the race, Mills, driving the No. 42 Chevrolet, collided with Jones, resulting in a violent crash that saw him quickly transported to a local medical facility. There, he was admitted for observation overnight while doctors monitored his oxygen levels in response to the smoke inhalation he had suffered.

“Mills, driver of the No. 42 for Niece Motorsports, was transported Saturday, Oct. 26, and placed under observation overnight following an incident during the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series race at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

“Matt and his team are grateful to the track safety teams, the NASCAR medical team and all hospital staff for their continued care.”

The accident also brought attention to Conner Jones, who was involved in the incident. Jones took responsibility for the collision and faced a wave of backlash for what he admitted was “unsportsmanlike behavior.” Notably, Jones has a history of clashes on the race track, and this season alone has witnessed several incidents between him and Mills. Jones shared on social media after the accident, previously reported by Newsweek Sports:

“I have not yet had the opportunity to personally apologize to Matt for the incident during today’s race at Homestead-Miami Speedway, but I intend to do so.

“Matt and I encountered several incidents on track this season, and I let my frustration get the better of me. I underestimated the impact my actions would have on Matt, and I deeply regret the consequences that follow up.”

“I would like to sincerely apologize to Matt, Niece Motorsports, NASCAR and my entire ThorSport Racing team for my unsportsmanlike behavior. My thoughts are with Matt during this time after learning he was taken to the hospital for evaluation more thorough following the accident.
