Mayor Adams is expected to withdraw his nomination of Randy Mastro to become the city government’s top lawyer, the Daily News has learned.
Mastro, a former deputy to Mayor Rudy Giuliani who has a history of championing conservative causes in court, endured a brutal confirmation hearing before the City Council last month, during which Democratic members castigated his professional history as a reason he was unfit to serve as city counsel.
The council was originally scheduled to vote on Mastro’s nomination on Thursday. Sources have expected for weeks that the council would reject his candidacy, which could deal him an embarrassing blow.
But two sources with direct knowledge of the matter confirmed to The News Tuesday night that the mayor had decided to withdraw his nomination after Mastro told him he no longer wanted to run for the job.
Neither Mastro nor the city hall immediately responded to requests for comment.
