Memphis police officer, civilian killed after downtown car crash, second officer seriously injured

A Memphis police officer and another individual are dead after an apparent crash near downtown Memphis early Friday morning, the Memphis Police Department said in a statement on social media.

According to MPD, police responded to a two-vehicle collision shortly after 3 a.m. at the corner of Mississippi and Danny Thomas boulevards. When they arrived, three men were found injured. Two of them were MPD officers.

All were taken to One Health Regional Center in critical condition, MPD said, where one officer and the driver of a gray Nissan were pronounced dead. The other officer remains in critical condition, MPD said.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the driver of the gray Nissan also suffered a gunshot wound,” police said in a statement. “The cause of the crash and the location of the initial shooting remain under investigation.”

The Tennessee Highway Patrol is investigating the crash and the MPD Homicide Bureau is investigating the shooting.

In an update posted to social media Friday morning, MPD said the initial shooting happened near South Parkway East and Mississippi Boulevard, about 2 miles from the crash scene.

“Initial information indicates there was a disagreement between the deceased victim and a male at the scene of the incident on S. Parkway E.,” MPD said. “No charges have been filed and the investigation is ongoing.”
