The Met Office has updated its yellow weather warning for thunderstorms as heavy downpours are expected to hit Liverpool and beyond. Its weather experts initially put the warning in place from midday on Thursday, August 1 until 11.59pm the same day.

But that date has been brought forward, with the alert in effect from 00:15 on Thursday until 23:59. The area covered by the alert has also been expanded, to cover more of north Wales and northern England, with most of England and Wales now covered.

The thunderstorm forecast comes after the region has been enjoying glorious sunshine and is expected to continue to do so. Today, Tuesday, maximum temperatures are expected to reach 22°C in the city, with plenty of sunshine, while Wednesday’s maximum temperatures are expected to reach 26°C, with cloudy intervals and sunny spells.

Thursday will be “warm and humid” with “possible thunderstorms in places, perhaps accompanied by torrential rain and hail” before becoming “cooler later”. Friday is expected to be a mix of sun and cloud, with highs of 25°C.

The Met Office said there is a “slight likelihood” of power cuts and other services to some homes and businesses being lost. There is also a small likelihood of homes and businesses being flooded rapidly, with damage to some buildings caused by floodwater, lightning, hail or high winds. There is also a risk of rapid or deep flooding “threatening life”.

The whole of the Liverpool city region is covered by the warning, and the forecast for Liverpool is for a 40% chance of rain between 1am and 7am, with a 20% chance of rain until 10am and 10% between 10am and 4pm, before a chance of less than 5% for the rest of Thursday.
