A dog has reportedly been killed and three others injured in a “horrific” attack by an XL Bully. The attack last night, July 19, also required medical attention for its owner, according to eyewitnesses who saw the horrific events unfold.
People who witnessed the attack in and around Peel Road in Bootle said they were left “traumatised” by what they saw. A neighbour, who wished to remain anonymous, contacted the ECHO to tell us what he saw.
He said he left his home after hearing a woman screaming and the sound of dogs fighting on Gray Street. He saw the XL Bully “shake” a dog in its jaws before grabbing the dog’s owner and dragging her to the ground. He said a passing taxi driver stopped his car and the two men chased the dog, which ran across the road and into Peel Road, while “throwing bricks and concrete slabs” at the animal in an attempt to stop it.

The man said the XL Bully ran along Peel Road where it attacked another dog, which he said was killed in the attack. He said the XL Bully then fled again, attacking a fourth dog before being “deliberately hit” by a car which pinned it to the wall of a house. The father said when the owner of the house came out to see what had happened, the dog ran into the house and was locked inside.

Laura, another neighbour who witnessed the attack, said she saw a dog “being mauled like a chew toy”. She said: “The dog was covered in wounds. Under his front legs, on his mouth, on the back of his tail, on his groin. It was horrific. I was covered in blood, and so was my daughter.”
Laura is an animal lover and says she is not a “XL hater”, but yesterday’s incident has made her wary of the dog that carried out the attack. She said: “I love animals of all kinds. But this dog is a monster. This is not the first time he has been attacked.”
She was due to celebrate a family birthday yesterday by dining out. But the trauma of the afternoon’s events left everyone at the table in a less than festive mood. Speaking to the ECHO last night, she said: “We’ve just been to dinner in a restaurant but none of us have eaten. It was a gloomy mood. It was so traumatic for us. We all love animals and it’s really affected us.”
The owner of the XL Bully was injured in the attack and was treated by paramedics at the scene. No other injuries were reported, but police said they were looking to identify other people who were injured.
A Merseyside Police spokesperson said yesterday: “We can confirm that an investigation is underway following reports that people and dogs were bitten by a dog in Bootle this afternoon (Friday 19 July). At approximately 3.15pm it was reported that two other dogs had been attacked by the offending animal and were taken to the vet for treatment. No injuries were reported to police, apart from the owner who was treated by paramedics following the incident.
“The dog was locked in a house with no one inside and was seized by police. Enquiries are underway at the scene to identify the injured and checks with local hospitals are underway. House-to-house enquiries will be carried out in the area and all avenues of CCTV are being explored.
