FREMONT – A motorcyclist died Saturday in Fremont after driving away from a police officer, according to police.
The incident began around 3:30 p.m., when a license plate reader detected a stolen motorcycle near Stevenson Boulevard and Balentine Place, Fremont police said in a news release. Twenty minutes later, a police officer found the motorcycle and attempted to stop the rider as he turned onto southbound Nobel Drive.
The motorcyclist sped away from the officer, who did not pursue him, police said.
Shortly thereafter, the motorcyclist was involved in a single-vehicle crash on Bunche Road. He struck a curb and a chain-link fence before being thrown from the motorcycle, police said.
The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. He had not been identified as of Tuesday.
This is the 13th traffic fatality in Fremont this year. Seven occurred on city roads, four on state roads and two on private property, according to police.
Police said the motorcycle was stolen.
