Navy paratrooper lands on mother and child, injuring them

A US Navy paratrooper missed his target during his performance at Fleet Week in San Francisco this weekend, hitting and injuring a mother and daughter, authorities say.

The incident occurred around 12:30 a.m. Sunday while the Navy’s Leap Frogs parachute team was performing a show, authorities said. The paratroopers, some of whom were trailing large flags, intended to land on the Marina Green in full view of spectators surrounding the area.

A video posted on X (formerly Twitter) shows a skydiver floating on the green to the applause of the crowd, flag in tow. Moments later, a second jumper carrying a flag is seen sailing above the target, descending among the spectators.

According to San Francisco police, the skydiver landed on a woman and her child, both of whom were hospitalized with minor injuries.

In the video, a passerby can be heard saying “Uh oh, too far” as the second parachute passes overhead. Then, someone screams as the parachutist lands.

The skydiver was not injured, authorities said.

Details of what caused the parachutist to land outside the target area were not immediately available.

“Our hearts go out to the individual and his family,” U.S. Navy officials said in a statement. “We cannot immediately assess what happened; however, we will review this incident to determine the cause.
