‘New Jack City’ Reboot: Will Netflix Remake the 1991 Film?

The 1991 crime drama is certainly ripe for such a film, especially in this day and age of reboots. After all, Tornadoes I just dropped it, there’s a next one Beetlejuice continuation and even Mean Girls has its own second act. But is it The City of New Jack following?

Wesley Snipes received the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Motion Picture for his portrayal of Nino Brown, a New York drug lord during the crack epidemic of the 1980s. Meanwhile, Detective Scotty Appleton (Ice-T) is determined to put a stop to his dealings.

The film also stars the talents of Allen Payne, Chris Rock, Mario Van Peebles — who also directed the film —, Michael Michele, Bill Nunn, Russell Wong, Bill Cobbs, Christopher Williams, Judd Nelson and Vanessa Williams, to name a few.

So, this is a The City of New Jack A Netflix remake on the horizon? Or is this rumor just that – a rumor? Here’s what we know.

Is there a The City of New Jack A remake in preparation on Netflix?

At present, there are no confirmed reports of a The City of New Jack a remake is in the works, let alone one produced by Netflix.

The Direct and Dexerto debunked rumors of a Mahershala Ali remake in January after a poster went viral from an account known for sharing promotional posters for fake movies — in fact, the account was also responsible for sparking rumors of a The Craquantes reboot that even Maya Rudolph, one of its rumored stars, got wind of. The City of New Jack The remake poster had announced a release in March 2024.

As The Direct noted, Deadline reported in 2019 about a reboot at Warner Bros., with Malcolm M. Mays as writer. According to NME, Snipes told Blavity News’ Shadow and Act that he was “not associated” with the project.
