New Jersey teen killed by boat propeller days before starting college

An 18-year-old woman was killed in a horrific accident off the Jersey Shore after she was struck by the propeller of a boat she was trying to board, police said.

New Jersey State Police identified the victim Monday as Zeina Mahafzah of Wayne. She was rafting in the waters off Sunset Park — on the Harvey Cedars Bay side of Long Beach Island — just before she died Sunday, New Jersey State Police Sergeant Jeffrey Lebron told NJ.com.

Mahafzah, a recent graduate of Wayne Hills High School, was set to begin his studies at Rutgers University next week.

At around 4:30 p.m., Mahafzah, 18, tried to get out of the raft and onto the boat that was pulling it through the water. She was hit by the boat’s propeller and suffered “fatal injuries,” police said in a statement.

Harvey Cedars police described it as a “tragic boating accident” that remains under investigation.

“As the investigation is in its early stages, we ask that you keep the family and community in your thoughts and prayers,” police said.
