New York Police Arrest Suspect in Murder of Popular Sneaker Reseller ‘Upscale Crocc’

Police arrested an upstate man Thursday in connection with the fatal shooting of popular sneaker retailer “Upscale Cracc” in Soho last spring.

Jayquan Straker, 35, has been charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of Javier Osario-Mejia. At the time, police suspected it was a robbery gone wrong. The Poughkeepsie resident also faces charges of robbery and criminal possession of a weapon, police said.

Osario-Mejia was shot in the right thigh outside a luxury clothing store in June on Greene St. near Grand St. At the time, police sources said the injury was so severe they were convinced he had been shot multiple times.

Officers and detectives from the NYPD’s 1st Precinct are seen investigating the scene of a shooting next to a white Range Rover outside 41 Greene Street in the Soho neighborhood of Manhattan.

The famous sneakerhead was about to open a new boutique on Houston St., according to a friend who spoke to the Daily News shortly after the shooting.

The friend, who gave his name as Andre, said Osario-Meija had a daughter he was raising alongside his business and described him as a “very hands-on father.”

“It doesn’t seem like a coincidence. It seems targeted. Everybody loved him,” Andre said at the time.

Information about what led to Straker’s arrest, nearly two months after his victim’s death, was unclear Saturday night.
