Staff at Newcastle University celebrate its highest ranking ever in this year’s QS World University Rankings 2023.
It came in at 122nd place in the influential university guide, representing an increase of 12 places year-on-year. Published today, QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) analyzed 2,462 international institutions across six indicators: Academic Reputation, Employer Reputation, Quotes Per. faculty, faculty / student relations, international faculty relations and international students.
The university continues to score highly for Employer Reputation, which ranks 65th globally, based on survey responses from more than 99,000 employers on the relationship between the institution’s and graduates’ employability. The area that has experienced the university’s highest increase is Citations per Faculty, reflecting the quality and impact of Newcastle University’s research as it moved up 80 places to 211st place.

Recent rankings complement the university’s performance in other international league tables, including the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings. The Times ranked Newcastle first in the UK and eighth in the world for its impact on society and leadership in sustainable development.
REF2021 confirmed growth in research expertise and impact in Newcastle. The national assessment of research results was published in May 2022 and reported on world-leading research with a unique impact on society and the economy across all disciplines at Newcastle University.
The overall top-ranked university in the world according to the QS World University Rankings was the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA) with an overall score of 100, followed by the UK University of Cambridge with a score of 98.8. Stanford University rounded out the top three with a score of 98.5 – by comparison, Newcastle University’s score was 54.8.
