The popular puzzle was launched by The New York Times in June 2023 and became the newspaper’s second most played game behind Wordanother word based puzzle.
Relationships challenges players to discover threads connecting a series of words. Instructions on how to play the game are below. The clues and answers to today’s riddle can be found towards the end of the article.
How to play “Connections”
Relationships tasks players with grouping 16 words into four categories based on association. For example, Wednesday’s game combined the words “Bubbles”, “Fizz”, “Foam” and “Moss” in the “Effervescence” category.
Each of the four categories is labeled with a color, which also indicates its difficulty level. Yellow is the simplest category, followed by green, blue and purple. The puzzles are rarely simple, using homophones and puns among other techniques, to keep players challenged.
The familiarity of the words used and the frequency with which they appear in modern life are also factors in difficulty, although less common words are not used only in the most difficult categories. “Element overlap,” where a word can be linked to multiple categories, is another way Relationships tests the players.
If stuck, players can press the shuffle button, which will shuffle where words appear on the screen.
Wyna Liu, crossword editor at The New York Times who was asked to develop Relationshipssaid News week about his recommended tips for playing the game.
“My best advice is to wait as long as possible before guessing,” she said.
“You can see the board and have completely identified the category, seeing five words that could fall into that category,” she continued. “Don’t try to guess all four words in this category, because even if you know which the fifth member is, you won’t know which of the four it might not be”, which ultimately leaves you would lose a turn.
“Don’t do what I do, which is ‘resolve rage,’” Liu said.
