Oak Lawn Domino’s Pizza employees save boy from fire – NBC Chicago

Two workers at a south suburban pizzeria were hailed as heroes for their quick thinking when flames engulfed a mobile home, trapping a boy inside.

Naser Khanfar and Sara Jones were approaching Domino’s Pizza in Oak Lawn after midnight Monday when Khanfar spotted something on fire. A trailer at the Airway mobile home park across the street was engulfed in flames.

“I see the fire, not the smoke, the fire comes out from the top,” Khanfar said.

The two Dominos employees ran across the parking lot, across Cicero Avenue and found the small trailer being consumed by fire. A father and son had escaped, but another little boy was trapped inside.

“Your family inside?” Khanfar remembers asking. “He said, ‘My children, my children…and we started breaking that window.’

They pulled the young boy out, covered in soot, but alive. The trailer was destroyed, but fortunately no one was injured in the fire.

Khanfar, who moved from Jordan to the area, said what he did wasn’t brave: it was being a good neighbor.

“You know this…what I believe. Today – him. Tomorrow – me,” he said.

Khanfar’s colleagues now consider him a hero.

“I’m very proud that they were able to save a life, step up and do something incredible like this,” one said.
