Ohio Republican Senate Candidate Bernie Moreno Says Abortion Is ‘Not a Problem’ for Women ‘Over 50’

The Republican candidate for U.S. Senate in Ohio says he doesn’t think abortion is “an issue” for women who are “over 50,” while suggesting that many suburban women vote for a single issue on abortion, according to video footage obtained by local station WCMH-TV from a town hall meeting Friday.

Republican businessman supported by Trump Bernie Moreno is running to unseat incumbent Sen. Sherrod Brown, a Democrat in a red-leaning state.

“You know, the left has a lot of single-issue voters,” Moreno says in the video. “Unfortunately, there are a lot of suburban women who are like, ‘Look, abortion is everything. If I can’t get an abortion whenever I want in this country, I’ll vote for anybody else.’ Okay. It’s kind of crazy, actually, but — especially for women over 50, I’m like, ‘I don’t think that’s an issue for you.’”

Former Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley took to X, formerly known as Twitter, ask:”Are you trying to lose the election?” Haley suggested his remarks were “tone deaf” and compared them to comments made by former CNN anchor Don Lemon, who was ousted from the network after say on air Haley, 52, is past her “prime.”

Last year, nearly 57 percent of Ohio residents voted to amend the state constitution to protect abortion rights and reproductive freedom, in a state where 53% of voters supported former President Donald Trump over President Biden in 2020.

“You know what’s crazy… Bernie Moreno thinks he knows more than 57% of Ohioans who voted to protect abortion rights last year,” Sen. Brown posted on “X.”

Trump also suggested abortion should no longer be a problem for women, praising the Supreme Court for Repeal of Roe v. Wade in 2022 and onwards States make their own laws and restrictions.

At a rally in Pennsylvania on Monday night, Trump said women would “not think about abortion” if he won in November. He also told women that if he became president, he would be their “protector.”

“I make this statement to the great women of our country,” Trump said at his rally, claiming that women are “poorer,” “less healthy,” “less safe,” and “more stressed, depressed, and unhappy” than before. “…I’m going to fix this and I’m going to fix it fast, and finally, this nation and this national nightmare will end, it will end. We have to end this national nightmare. Because I am your protector. I want to be your protector. As president, I have to be your protector.”

“You will no longer be left alone or afraid,” Trump added. “You will no longer be in danger, you will no longer be in harm’s way. You will no longer be in anguish over all the problems that our country has today. You will be protected and I will be your protector. Women – women will be happy, healthy, confident and free. You will no longer think about abortion, that’s all we talk about, abortion.”
