A shootout between an off-duty Chicago police officer and several gunmen took place Tuesday morning in the Morgan Park neighborhood on the city’s far South Side.
Around 5:30 a.m., the officer was confronted by several armed men in the 10800 block of South Campbell Avenue and a shootout broke out, Chicago police said.
The officer involved confirmed to NBC Chicago that the shooting followed an attempted carjacking.
No injuries were reported, Chicago police and fire spokesman Larry Langford said.
The gunmen fled the scene in a dark-colored car, but a suspect was arrested near the scene, authorities said. No additional information is currently available regarding the other suspects involved.
“It’s surreal. Getting those phone calls early in the morning. Seeing the police response and coming here and seeing the chaos,” said 19th Ward Councilman Matt O’Shea.
O’Shea said he is friends with the off-duty officer and added that he is grateful that he and other neighborhood residents are doing well.
The officer involved in the shooting will be placed on routine administrative duty for a minimum of 30 days.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability conducted an investigation.
