Paul Scholes has revealed the three toughest Premier League stars he played against in his time at Manchester United.

The former United midfielder played 718 times for the Red Devils and won 11 top titles, three FA Cups and two Champions Leagues during his 19-year career at the club.

However, he says playing against people like Robbie Savage, Patrick Vieira and Pape Bouba Diop made life difficult for him at Old Trafford as they were ‘big’ and ‘quick to shut him down’.

The 47-year-old – who retired in 2013 as United’s third-highest-ever appearance ever, behind Bobby Charlton and Ryan Giggs – explained why he chose these three as the toughest Premier League stars he played against.

In a speech on BBC Radio 5’s Savage Social show, he said: ‘When I played central midfield, I like to go into games and think’ I just want all the time in the world here, just no one around me, just find a little bit of space and pass the ball around.

‘Then you play against people like you [Robbie Savage]. An absolute nuisance, trying to shut you down dead fast. I do not want that, I just want it nice and relaxed.

– The way I played did not really have to beat people or be stronger, faster than the other person.

‘I suppose Patrick Vieira, you play against him, he’s so tall, he’s so big. You think you have the ball, and the next moment he hits it over your head, he was a clever player too.

‘There is one more that people do not think of. We used to play against Portsmouth. Do you remember Pape Bouba Diop? Large, massive. They used to call him the wardrobe.

‘You get physically involved with him and you waste your time. I’ve always found him awkward to play against. He was not a Vieira, of course he was not, but he still had talent. ‘
