Person of interest in custody following fatal Navy Pier shooting – NBC Chicago

A person of interest is in custody in connection with the fatal shooting of two people at Chicago’s Navy Pier earlier this week.

According to an update released by police, the investigation into the shooting is still ongoing, but a person of interest was taken into custody Thursday.

Police say a massive search took place after the “targeted” shooting that occurred Tuesday at a loading dock at Navy Pier.

“At this time, we believe a disgruntled former employee entered the loading dock, fired several shots, striking two people who were taken to Northwestern Hospital, where they succumbed to their injuries ” said CPD Patrol Chief Jon Hein. during a press conference. “At this time, on behalf of Supt. [Larry] Snelling, we would like to extend our condolences to the victims, their families and loved ones.”

The identities of the two victims, both working for a contractor at the dock, were not immediately released, but Navy Pier officials said they were shot in a loading dock area, where There was a private office.

“On behalf of Navy Pier, we also send our condolences to the families of the victims who just came to work today,” said Brian Murphy, Navy Pier director of operations.

The shooter was reportedly arrested on October 14.

The shooting happened shortly after 1:15 p.m. in the 900 block of East Grand, officials said.

Shortly after, Navy Pier asked everyone at the scene to shelter in place while police investigated. Some residents of nearby offices and buildings were also asked to stay indoors or “exercise extreme caution” during the investigation.

Authorities later said in their 4 p.m. update that the lockdown had been lifted and that “at no time were any people in danger.”
