Pioneer Works Celebrates 10 Years in Psychedelic Fashion

While some may think that artists and scientists may not have all that much in common, the minds behind Pioneer Works beg to differ. On Friday, November 11, the nonprofit cultural center dedicated to building community through the arts and sciences threw its annual Village Fête, held in celebration of Pioneer Works’ 10th anniversary and honoring Marilyn and Jim Simons of the Simons Foundation. True to its mission, during the evening you could find creatives like artist Derrick Adams, Succession’s Alexander Skarsgård, and Girls’ star Jemima Kirke rubbing elbows and hitting the dance floor with theoretical physicists and rocket scientists.

Cochaired by Austin Hearst and Chloé creative director Gabriela Hearst, the event boasted a “psychedelic dream” dress code, encouraging guests to don their grooviest apparel. Fittingly, the red brick walls of the 19th-century iron works building Pioneer Works calls home in Red Hook, Brooklyn, were lined with far-out visual art installations from Charles Atlas, whose exhibition “The Mathematics of Consciousness” was on display there. After cocktail hour and a DJ set from Miho Hatori, guests gathered in the main hall for dinner, remarks from Pioneer Works founder Dustin Yellin and director of science Janna Levin, as well as a performance from Circuit des Yeux.

Skarsgård—decked out in an Adidas track jacket—wasn’t the only Succession star in attendance. He was joined by his other vertically blessed costar, Nicholas Braun, and the two towered over the other guests as they danced all night, even as meals were being served. Also at their table was The Whale director Darren Aronofsky, sporting a patterned orange ensemble and laughing with the two actors. After unveiling a model for what would be New York City’s first-ever public observatory, which Pioneer Works plans to build, closing remarks were heard by Austin Hearst, executive director Maxine Petry, and founding artistic director Gabriel Florenz, and the revelry continued on all three floors.
