Police investigate attempted kidnapping of 9-year-old from city park

Police have launched an investigation after an attempted child abduction in Birmingham. A nine-year-old girl was approached by a man in Bloomsbury Park in Nechells at around 4.30pm on Saturday 20 July.

The man asked the girl if she wanted an ice cream and grabbed her hand, police said. Fortunately, a family member intervened and the suspect fled.




The suspect was described as a white male, aged around 30, with short blond hair and a large build. He is between 1.65 and 1.73 m tall.

He was wearing a blue T-shirt and black tracksuit bottoms with blue stripes at the time of the incident. Detective Inspector Junior Stephens of Birmingham Police said: “We understand how distressing the incident will be for the community, but please be assured that we are taking this extremely seriously.

“We believe this is an isolated incident and would like to appeal to anyone who was in the vicinity at the time to speak to us if they have not already done so. Since the incident we have increased our patrols in the area, reviewed CCTV footage and spoken to witnesses.
