Police investigate drowning of two young children on Long Island

Suffolk County homicide detectives are investigating the deaths of two toddlers who were pulled unconscious from a pond behind a Holtsville apartment complex Saturday afternoon.

The sisters, ages 2 and 4, were initially reported missing in a 911 call from a family member, the Suffolk Police Department said in a news release.

Police responding to the Fairfield Townhouses site at 2 Victorian Court joined good Samaritans in searching the complex. The girls were found behind the complex in a pond by good Samaritans and pulled unconscious from the water at around 3.20pm, police said.

They were taken by ambulance to Stony Brook University Hospital, where they were pronounced dead, police said.

Police have not provided an explanation for why the incident is being treated as a possible homicide. Investigators are asking anyone with information about the incident to call the homicide squad at 631-852-6392.
