A police officer stabbed in the chest at a Category A prison suffered “serious injuries” but is now in a “stable” condition, cops have said.
A man in his 60s has been arrested after the incident at HMP Frankland on Tuesday morning, Durham Police said.
The officer, a detective from Greater Manchester Police, was visiting the Category A men’s prison. prison.
Chief Inspector Chris Smiles, who is leading the investigation, said: “Firstly, our thoughts are with our colleague, who suffered horrific injuries while simply doing his job.
“Fortunately, his condition is no longer critical and we wish him a full and speedy recovery.
“We are in contact with the victim and his family and our investigation is continuing.”
A police spokesman had previously said the incident happened shortly after 11am this morning.
They said the officer “suffered a stab wound to the chest during the incident” and was taken to hospital by ambulance.
He had earlier been described as being “conscious and speaking.”

Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood said: “Deeply worrying news from Frankland Prison today where a police officer has been stabbed, although he is conscious and talking in hospital.
“I am being kept informed of all developments. And my thoughts are with this brave officer.”
The prison houses more than 800 men, including Wayne Couzens, a former Metropolitan Police officer who kidnapped, raped and murdered Sarah Everard in 2022, and double murderer and necrophile David Fuller.
